Small town, I love Wyoming.

Sooooo much! Family run company, family gets the majority of the perks and opportunity.MUCH family politics. MUCH "empire building" throughout management, even "outside" the family. ZERO opportunity for advancement unless you have the right last name, etc.

OPEN YOUR EYES!! There's a LOT of talent in and around your company GOING TO WASTE because you won't consider the potential of anyone who isn't in (or doesn't marry into) your family. Run it like a company instead of like an "extended family retirement plan."

It was perfect at the start, then they chipped away at the dream until it became unbearable.

Schmooze the family. And ALWAYS keep looking for other options and companies. Since I left they continue to have difficulty getting and keeping good people. (Many of the people who stay "aren't the best" and probably don't have many other options.)
