Tufts University is a private, non-profit post-secondary institution located in Medford, Massachusetts, a town near Boston. Tufts was founded in 1852 under the name of Tufts College by a Christian Universalist group and has recently gained worldwide recognition as a top American university.
Tufts University is consistently placed in the highest tier of American colleges and universities by U.S. News and World Report, Princeton Review and other college ranking services. A highly competitive school, Tufts' admissions rate was 22% as of 2011. Tufts is a popular first choice for students in the top ten percent of their graduating classes, and many of Tufts' prospective graduate students compete for admission to the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, which boasts the oldest international relations program in the United States. Tufts is also distinguished by its many study abroad programs.
Officially, Tufts employs around 3,500 people. Many of these employees are graduate students who choose to work as research assistants and teaching assistants while studying. Tufts' academic staff numbers about 1,200. The university also employs clerks and accountants in each of its school's administrative staffs.
