Current CEO: Cindy Miller

Status: Active

Stericycle specializes in the collection and disposal of medical waste. The company also disposes of expired, recalled and unsalable medical products. Using environmentally-sound disposal methods are also important in the Stericycle culture. In the past, medical waste was usually incinerated or placed in landfills. Stericycle patented a technique called Electro Thermal Deactivation (ETD) to reduce dependence upon incineration. Its Yorkville, Wis., ETD facility was recognized in 2007 and 2008 by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources for environmental excellence. To keep waste out of landfills, Stericycle utilizes reusable sharps containers.

Stericycle was listed as one of Forbes’ Best 200 Small Companies from 2001 to 2005. Based in Lake Forest, Ill., Stericycle has 10 service locations across the nation, plus operations in several other countries. The company has over 8,000 direct employees and an extensive network of independent contractors. Among Stericycle’s clients are hospitals, medical and dental offices, blood banks and pharmacies.

Most independent contractors deal with recalled products either at consumer locations or in distribution centers. Other independent contractors conduct retail audits. Some contractor positions require training or certification.
