"poor leadership"

What do you like about working at Siemens?

"Most of the writers were great, they are professionals and conduct themselves in a professional manner. They were ready to share information and open to other ideas on how to get the job done."

Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?

"If you are offered a position working for the manager under whom I worked, run don't walk to the nearest exit."

What don't you like about working at Siemens?

"Management. The manager of the area in which I worked was never a writer and did not understand even the most basic of documentation production. In my opinion management took the position that everyone is stupid but us. When presented with ideas, if they responded at all, they found some reason for not including outside input into the decision making process. When I a comment about the poor useability of a documentation application (a CMS) I was told that I just didn't understand. The fact was that management made a decision to purchase a very expensive CMS without asking anyone within the department if it was the best choice and once they determined that they had made a bad choice it was the workers, the technical writers, that didn't understand. Also no training was purchased for this system and with the help of a salesmen that was hired as a consultant, myself and a few other writers we figured out how this system worked."

What suggestions do you have for management?

"A manager for a technical writing department should have experience in the technical writing field, so that this person understands that just throwing more bodies at a poorly thought out schedule will not solve the problem."
