Quality assurance engineers (typically referred to as QA engineers) are in charge of testing software or webpages for software and website development companies. The engineer's job is to find bugs and glitches, or other performance problems.


Skill Set:

QA engineers must be exacting in their methods, pay close attention to various details and know computer, software and website systems thoroughly. Written and verbal communication skills are also needed as engineers will frequently be required to produce reports on various problems they have found while testing. Organizational skills and critical thinking are essential in this field.


Education:

Most engineers begin their career by attaining a bachelor degree in computer engineering or software engineering. Some students begin training by earning an Associate of Applied Science (with a focus on IT and computer studies) before going on for further training in development. Some colleges offer specific degrees for quality assurance in a computer science field as well.


Career Path:

Schooling is a must for anyone interested in becoming a QA engineer; most entry level jobs will require a bachelor degree in a related field or relevant work experience, most of which will require a four-year degree. Many engineers have held previous positions as software developers and programers.
