South Dakota State University Overview

South Dakota State University (SDSU) is a public, land-grant school with an enrollment of more than 12,000 students. Based in Brookings, South Dakota, it is the largest university in the state and one of the top research schools in the Midwest. SDSU has been ranked among the top 200 national universities by U.S. News and World Report.

South Dakota State University was established as a result of the 1862 Morrill Act, which granted federal land to states to be used for land-grant colleges. Founded in 1881 as Dakota Agriculture College, the university received its current name in 1964. The school now offers more than 200 undergraduate majors and minors, as well as several dozen master's and doctorate degree programs. The university’s graduates have a history of success, with about 95 percent of students moving into jobs, graduate school, fellowships or internships after graduation.
