Max Kohl, founder of Kohl's Department Store, began as the owner of a small grocery store. Before long, his grocery business became the largest supermarket chain in Milwaukee. In 1978, BATUS, Inc. bought 80 percent of the company, and took over Kohl's Food and Department Stores. During the next decade, BATUS continued to expand the company, and it soon had branches in Illinois and Indiana. In 1983, BATUS sold the company to Great Atlantic and Pacific Tea (A&P).

In 1986, a group of investors bought Kohl's Department Stores and formed Kohl's Corporation. Since then, Kohl's Corporation has added new distribution centers, increased store locations, upgraded brands, and given customers on-line shopping options.
