Truck drivers are responsible for the transportation of various kinds of cargo and freight. A typical day for a truck driver includes long hours on the road and planning ahead for future pickups and deliveries.
Skillset: Truck drivers must have strong driving skills and be able to handle long hours on the road. They must be able to plan ahead and handle any unforeseen circumstances that may happen while on the road. Strong communication skills are necessary as you may be required to stay in contact with supervisors and/or other truck drivers via radio or telephone while on the road.
Education: Truck drivers are required to have a commercial driver’s license (CDL) to operate a commercial motor vehicle (CMV).
Career Path: After earning a CDL, truck drivers have a multitude of jobs to choose from. Each job requires strong driving and communication skills but may have different travel requirements. Generally, the higher paying jobs require traveling long distance or overnight delivery.
