Shift managers, also known as shift supervisors, supervise other employees and handle customer complaints. Shift managers typically do the same work as other staff members, but are in charge of maintaining the work standard during an allotted time period. Shift managers report to the store manager.
Skill Sets: They should have the ability to get along well with other employees and be a team leader. Shift managers must be motivating and able to work without supervision. They may be responsible for end of day accounting transactions. Good computer and math skills are beneficial.
Education: A high school diploma or the equivalent is required. Courses in management would be helpful. Depending upon the company, courses in office software and office business machinery could be beneficial. Seek leadership education through volunteering to manage projects at non-profit organizations.
Career Path: Shift managers usually start out as entry level employees and work their way up to management. While working for a company, show initiative, be punctual and learn company policies. Pursue an associates degree in management to build your skills.
