Servers work in restaurants and wait on patrons. Typically, servers greet patrons, describe specials, answer questions about the menu and bring the food and drink the customers ordered.
Skillset: Servers generally have good people skills and can anticipate the wants and needs of restaurant clients. Servers must be able to multitask and work in a fast-paced environment. Strong money-handling skills and the ability to work on his or her feet are required. Servers must have the ability to memorize the menu and basic computer skills.
Education: There is no degree requirement to become a server. However, servers must possess basic math skills to make change, the ability to prioritize demands in a fast-paced environment, excellent customer service skills and basic computing skills to use the order system and cash register.
Career Path: Servers typically begin restaurant work as a host or busser. Potential servers should work in these positions to prove they are reliable, hard-working employees and let the restaurant manager know they would like to become a server in the future. While working as a busser or host, the employee should take time to memorize the menu.
