In general, they greet clients, sell the products or services of a company, assist customers in picking out products and handle financial transactions. They should have a strong grasp of the products and services a company offers and be able to navigate customers through the selection process.
Skill Sets: Solid communication skills are paramount. Retail sales associates spend most of their day interacting with customers. They should be able to use a cash register and credit card machine. Dressing neatly and being physically able to spend most of the workday on their feet is important.
Education: In general, there is no education requirement for retail sales associates. Some companies may require a high school diploma or the equivalent. Courses in sales and marketing would be helpful.
Career Path: A position as retail sales associate is an entry level job. Employees with a good track record have the potential to be promoted to management or a higher level of sales associate.
