A program manager is in charge of making sure that all aspects of a software program are in place before release. They coordinate, maintain and manage programs for a company or institution. In essence, a program manager manages software programs rather than employees.


Skill Sets: Organizational skills are paramount as the program manager will establish the work flow and deadlines for various projects. Program managers must have a strong background in technology and creating software. Expertise in managing every aspect of projects from start to finish is key.


Education: A bachelors degree in program management, business administration or software engineering is normally required. Some companies require a Master's in Business Administration (MBA). Completion of Project Management Professional certification exam is recommended.


Career Path: Becoming a program manager requires a combination of education and work experience. Pursue a bachelors degree. Secure a job as a assistant project manager or project coordinator and work for a promotion. An internship as a project assistant would be helpful.
