Job Summary:

Lerch Bates is seeking a Forensic Engineer to join our team! The Forensic Engineer is responsible for civil and structural forensic consultation, investigation, and design. This includes scheduling and performing site evaluations, field analysis, and assessments of structural systems. This position requires building and maintaining client relationships, including independent client interaction, and consulting with design and construction professionals when needed. What You'll Do:

The duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed in this position. They are not intended to prescribe or restrict the assignments that management may make.

Assessment

  • Conduct on-site investigations and field review of existing buildings to review damage and conditions, including large volume, multi-building loss, or catastrophic loss
  • Review background documentation to determine original construction detailing and identify the cause of failure (i.e., water penetration, air leakage, and/or condensation, structural and civil deficiencies, etc.)

Evaluate
  • Prepare and present reports and presentations of findings that document the existing conditions and provide recommended repairs for damage
  • Conduct product research and comparison as needed, independently
  • Input findings into Cost Estimating systems such as Xactimate, RS Means, and/or other programs to produce accurate cost estimating for a variable client base
  • Interpret current and previously applicable code, assist with code upgrade research and application where required

Design
  • Provide structural and civil failure analysis, repair design, and signature/seal when necessary
  • Participate and/or lead in meetings with insurance adjusters, owners, developers, architects, and/or other consultants that vary in size and complexity
  • Conduct drawing, detail, and specification reviews

Communication
  • Act as a trusted advisor to Clients and prospective Clients; own and develop the Client relationship by participating in client services and business development events
  • Explore and capitalize on opportunities to enhance service with or up-sell existing clients/projects
  • Proactively keep clients and stakeholders informed of project status and changes

Tracking
  • Manage time and resources effectively using the department tools; maintain and communicate schedule
  • Ensure personal utilization is consistently above 95%

What You'll Bring:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering Discipline
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in the architecture, engineering and/or construction industry
  • Demonstrated proficiency in technical writing
  • P.E. Licensure/Experience required to take P.E. exam for licensure/E.I.T.
  • A strong understanding of residential, commercial, or institutional building design and construction
  • An ability to communicate complex technical information and build rapport with co-workers, clients, contractors, sub-contractors, and other industry stakeholders via written & verbal reports, and presentations
  • Excellent skills in technical writing, documentation, and communication
  • A demonstrated commitment to quality, organization, meticulous attention to detail, and consistency in work product
  • An ability to identify and resolve structural, building envelope, and civil issue
  • Previous cost analysis experience (preferred)
  • Experience working for a contractor for structural, building envelope, commercial roofing, and/or waterproofing projects (preferred)
  • Proficiency in one or more design/modeling software programs, including AutoCAD; Bluebeam®, Revit (preferred)
  • Master's Degree in Engineering Discipline (Civil, Structural, Construction) or Architecture
  • Certification in industry-specific technical areas (preferred)
  • Previous experience in field investigations and building rehabilitations, including structural, grading, and drainage (preferred)
  • Experience with Eagle View, Property Reports software (preferred)
  • Experience with Xactimate and/or R.S. Means estimating software (preferred)
