Position Overview

BSA is seeking Safety Manager to provide enterprise wide environmental and safety support to protect participants and staff. The Safety Manager performs hazard identification and monitoring, develops and maintains safety and health policies, procedures, and manuals. Leads analysis of reported incidents, evaluates hazards associated with programs, processes, and operations to ensure that environmental and safety concerns are identified and documented, provides plans for senior leadership to implement and integrate risk mitigation into programs, processes, and operations and monitors results of risk mitigation plans. This role also leads analyst for reported incidents, leads audits to ensure environmental and safety related standards are in place and met, and prepares and rolls out safety initiatives, educational and training programs, materials and information under the direction of department leadership. A deep understanding of OHSA guidelines and practical application. The Safety Manager reports to the Director of Environmental Health and Safety.


Must be able to travel from Irving, TX, or live in Cimarron, NM, to our Philmont High Adventure Base.


Responsibilities

  • Identifies and evaluates occupational risks and hazards associated with BSA activities and programs and recommends changes and improvements.
  • Implements and integrates agreed upon controls or risk mitigation strategies into BSA activities and programs. Monitors, audits, and implements controls to ensure effectiveness and reports on results.
  • Diligently reviews and leads analysis of injury, illness, accidents, or near misses to establish root causes, identifies trends, and updates program specific prevention strategies. Maintains confidential records.
  • Maintains records of hazard and risk assessments, audits and near miss reports.
  • Participates as a member of cross functional teams providing consulting on health-related and occupational related issues. Leads environmental and safety related initiatives. Coaches managers on prevention measures.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.


Job Competencies:

Knowledge of: Program implementation and risk mitigation strategies; federal and state occupational, EHS regulations and standards; hazard identification and risk assessment methodologies; Incident investigation and root cause analysis techniques; data analysis and reporting methods.

Skill in: Leading investigations and analyzing incidents; safety training and facilitation; interpersonal communication and team collaboration; data analysis and interpretation; project management.

Ability to: Identify and assess potential hazards; develop and implement risk mitigation strategies; conduct investigations and analyze incidents; effectively communicate EHS information to diverse audiences; work in a cross-functional team environment; prioritize multiple tasks and meet deadlines.


Education

Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Environmental Science, Environmental Health, Occupational Safety and Health or a related field from an accredited college or university.


Qualifications

  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience in environmental health and safety (EHS) or a closely related field.
  • Must pass a criminal history background check.
  • Must be able to travel from Irving, TX, or live in Cimarron, NM, to our Philmont High Adventure Base.


Licenses

  • Ability to validate competency as a Certified Safety Professional within four years.


Preference: One of the following

  • Graduate Safety Professional (GSP) or Associate Safety Professional (ASP) preferred.
