Overview
Idaho National Laboratory is a federal research center located in the desert of Idaho Falls, Idaho. The laboratory is a testing and research center for nuclear energy, national security and environmental issues. The laboratory was founded in 1949 and was named the National Reactor Testing Station. The NRTS was divided in 1975 into three divisions. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission, Energy Research and Development Administration and the Atomic Energy Commission. Throughout many decades there have been over 50 nuclear reactors located on site. Today, all but three nuclear reactors are out of service.
Idaho National Laboratory develops nuclear projects that improve nuclear power plants, expand nuclear energy benefits and strive to make nuclear energy safe, secure and sustainable. They also develop homeland and national security projects that improve communications networks. The laboratory also develops energy and environmental projects that improve fuel systems, robotics and biological systems.
