1.7 I worked for Extra Space for almost 5 years, and it was the worst 5 years of my life. The job is extremely stressful. I had my life and fellow employees lives threatened numerous times, and the worst part is the District Manager could care less. The turnover is unbelievable, expect to run a facility by yourself a lot, which I need to add includes helping out all customers, cleaning property, cleaning units, making collection calls, walking the entire property at least twice, and other random basic upkeep on the property on a daily basis. While some days this might not be too bad, there are days where you are so swamped that you can only get a couple things done, and of course if you are super busy and get off late, be prepared to have to defend yourself. As I mentioned the turnover is so great that you may be by yourself for months at a time running a large facility. Since I quit this job, I have watched 8 positions open on career websites just for my district alone, and it has just been about 6 months! Also the company seems to reward flaky employees. I watched employees who were new miss weeks of work in the first 3 months and still not get fired. This happened numerous times, while employees who had been worth the company for a long time continued to have their job threatened. Also if you are female, be super perky, or you will be told to be more upbeat. I was literally told I needed to be more perky by my District Manager, and yet not a single male employee was told this, and while the Male managers in my district were great employees, by no stretch of the term would you consider them perky. Also if you are female, do not reach out for anything higher up then store manager in the company, or rather anything other then a white male between the ages of 30 and 40. In short Extra Space does not appreciate its employees, and is progressively worse company to work for, and you do not want to work for them.

2.3 One year was was enough. Excellent benefits & but thats about it. What you are promised the values the ESS dream its all fake, unless you are in a position above the DM status. Nepotism and favoritism run rampid. You are a underpaid janitor, sales clerk, insurance agent, and banker. Security is a issue as well you work 75% alone in a huge property where anything can go wrong. If you have a problem be weary of the HR department and what ever you do dont point out where the company needs change. Open door policy Ha thats a joke. There have been numerous threats of harm and death threats from bad renters this is Proven documented as well all you have to so is look, read and ask around. Policy change needs to be made but corporate will spin a tale that they are looking into it. The have not looking into change for over 10 years and the same situations arise. Corporate will always choose the customer and saving themselves from Bad PR or a poor Google review before they put the managers first. As for change write a letter and you get interrogated, criticized by HR director herself and you can bet you last pay check on retaliation. Because if will be your last one if you speak out and self advocate. If you have perfect history not one write you you will find yourself having 3 or more within one month so they can legally terminate you. Heck they will even go looking for things that are 8 months old that were never made a issue nor mentioned as a problem but it sure is a problem now. Oh yes I nearly forgot the company is needing 152 managers within a 30 day period alone. And NO they didnt grow that many sites over night people are quitting left and right! Do yourself a favor when job or career hunting. Pay attention to the few BAD reviews rather than the mutli shining ones. This company pays and rewards employees for good reviews. Most 4 and 5 star employee reviews are fake. Do yourself a real favor keep on looking do not stop do not pass go do not apply to Extra Space.

2.5 Ensure that the staffing levels were appropriate for the facilities so there wasn't such intense effort required daily by people having to work solo. There would be an immediate change in the manner in which the executives and managers in the company spoke with the employees. It is currently VERY condescending. There would be less talk about return on investment to the stockholders and more attention to just running the facilities properly.
