Consultants provide strategic advice for businesses that are looking to become more efficient or make a couple of changes. They rely on data and business acumen to help businesses make decisions that will raise profits. They are typically brought in as third parties to provide recommendations that a business can either implement or not implement.
Skillset: Consultants must have business smarts and finance ability if they want to make good decisions. They must be able to analyze data without bias. They must be willing and able to make difficult and sometimes unpopular decisions. They must also be able to communicate those recommendations in a way that makes sense. This necessitates both written and oral communication skills.
Education: Most consultants have a business or finance background. Many of these people will study economics in college. For some of the best consulting firms, applicants must have an MBA in order to gain consideration.
Career Path: A consultant must have a firm grasp of both statistical analysis and business fundamentals. Most will get a strong finance education to start with. They will then move toward an MBA to add some marketability to their resume package. These individuals will usually start out with an internship with one of the major consulting firms.
