What do you like about working at United States Marine Corps?
They are a true family environment. They took me in raw without any I.T. know how whatsoever. While paying me a full salary, they provided me with some quality PC maintenance and troubleshooting training (a 12 week intense course). They then allowed me to go out and do my job with very little supervision.
What don't you like about working at United States Marine Corps?
This would have to be the pay and the ability to grow. I give the USMC a lot of the credit for where I am today. However, for someone with my goals and ambitions the governments ability to adapt to new technologies just did not meet with my expectations.
What suggestions do you have for management?
I.T. is one field where going up the chain of command may not be the best way to manage the immediate needs of the end user.
Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?
I'll state this again because without the USMC I don't know where I would be today. If you're like me and come from a large family where the parents don't have the means to put you and all of your siblings through a university then this is great way to get started. The U.S. armed forces will train you and give you some very good basic I.T. skills and after you have honorably completed your services with them, they will provide you with an educational package that will make it much easier for you to attend the university of your choice. Furthermore, because you already have hands on experience in the I.T. field, all of those bits and bytes are going to make a lot more sense while studying at the university.

What do you like about working at United States Marine Corps?
There was always a feeling of belonging. No mater which base you were assigned to, you made friends quickly. You were always judged on your merits and all members, not just enlisted were held accountable for their actions, no one was ever left to "The wolves". The Marine Corp is a brotherhood of the best. Training was excellent and you were recognized for your efforts in learning.
What don't you like about working at United States Marine Corps?
Sometimes it was hard to leave friends and uproot your family every few years, but that was understood as being part of the job.
What suggestions do you have for management?
Over all I believe the "Management" is excellent. No matter who you were, if you got out of line or did immoral or unethical acts, you were held accountable, from private to general. Occasionally there were exceptions, but not for long, it would catch up with them.
Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?
If you want to find out how good you are or can be, join. If you don't care about others or want to let everyone else carry the load, don't join, you would be disappointed. I was in for 7.5 active and 2 reserve and I wouldn't trade it for anything in the world. It made me a better person.

What do you like about working at United States Marine Corps?
Comrade, Friendship, and Team, it's the best way to describe my experience. Once you're in the battle field, you know the person next to you regardless of race or culture, he's not only your friend, but your brother in arms. You know that if something should happened to you, he will back you up with his life and you know you will do the same for him as well.
What don't you like about working at United States Marine Corps?
3 things I really hate about the Marine Corps, they are running, M16A2, and camping. Reason I list them, is because we would run nearly everyday and if the OIC feels great that morning you know you're running 5 miles instead of the usual 3 miles. As for the M16A2, I've never clean something for so long and it took me an entire day to clean my rifle only to be told it's still dirty. As for the camping, I used to love the outdoors. Until I got in the Marines Corps and all we did was go to the field for training. I'm all for training, but not when it's raining cold freezing water from the skies and especially not when it's sub-zero and you have to go out to the field for excercise to met the training requirement for the month.
What suggestions do you have for management?
None at all.

What do you like about working at United States Marine Corps?
The Marines. When they deploy, I keep them in my prayers. Professionally, they have allowed me to develop weaker areas of my abilities. While I am OK with BASH shell scripting, I am now learning PERL. I have had the exposure to Oracle Application Server and to Oracle Portal and HTML DB. With the Marines, I have the opportunity to dwelve deeper into other technical areas.
What don't you like about working at United States Marine Corps?
The development manager really likes sharepoint which used SQL Server.
What suggestions do you have for management?
This would be a response that would be kept in house
Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?
Don't lie. The other three DBA's BSed their way. By being honest, I have gained management respect to a level that I have never known. There is a responsibility for DBA to be able to explain what we do so that management can support our efforts. In addition, they like being involved knowing that their permission or concurrence is requested before action.

What do you like about working at United States Marine Corps?
My military experience was amazing. I learned so much it is hard to describe how much it has shaped me as a person and as a man.
What don't you like about working at United States Marine Corps?
I do not dislike anything about the Marines. My only regret is that I would have chosen a different military occupational skill. I have thaught many times why I decided to leave the military and second guess if it was the right one. If I was younger I would do it over in a heartbeat.
What suggestions do you have for management?
Nothing really. The only thing I see is that they have gone soft due to public opinions. People who have joined the military and who have made it through boot camp expect a certain level of how should I say tough love. To let weak hearted pansys cry wolf and put peoples lifes in danger is wrong. Of corse anyone who has actually served has a very different view on what is acceptable behavior training wise. OORAH!!!

What do you like about working at United States Marine Corps?
I joined the Marine Corps right before 9/11/01. I learned a great deal in the Marine Corps. My favorite part about the USMC were the people and the places I traveled. I did my service in Operation Enduring Freedom and can't explain the pride I have for being a Marine. The USMC gave me the ability to believe I can do anything and for that I am quite greatful.
What don't you like about working at United States Marine Corps?
The disappointing part of the Military was the pay and the hours. I believe the military should be paid more as a great amount of sacrifice is required.
What suggestions do you have for management?
I believe the management in the Corps should listen to their subordinates. Unfortunately there is a strong gap between enlisted personel and Officers.
Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?
Do as much research before hand as you can. There are many benefits offered, but not advertised, prior to enlisting.

What do you like about working at United States Marine Corps?
This was a very professional environment. There is continuing education on critical issues, like tact, professionalism, etc.
What don't you like about working at United States Marine Corps?
There is not enough understanding, as far as employees wanting to pursue university education. The severity varies from unit-to-unit.
What suggestions do you have for management?
Learn to THINK, before you make decisions. Experience has NOTHING to do, with what you will get from an employee.
Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?
Ensure that you really want to join the Corps. Working to earn the title, "Marine" will probably be the hardest thing that you will EVER do. I was discharged 10 years ago, and it still is the hardest thing I've ever done. ....I have a graduate degree from one of the best schools in America.

What do you like about working at United States Marine Corps?
I liked traveling to foreign countries and being around diverse cultures.
What don't you like about working at United States Marine Corps?
There is no real opportunity for personal growth unless you're an officer or lucky to be in a unit that doesn't have high priority training or supervisors that use their position to limit you. Improving your personal education or embarking on new career possibilities while still serving is not on their priority list.
What suggestions do you have for management?
Do not micro manage if it is not necessary.
Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?
Apply at your own risk. Look into the Air Force or possibly a reserve unit for a military career that will allow you to enhance and add to your professional skills and possibly give you a better future after you get out.

What don't you like about working at United States Marine Corps?
Waking up with the rising sun to go on a 7 - 10 mile run
What suggestions do you have for management?
The Marines manage themselves well but sometimes the work needs to be spread out for better time management. They have you rush to complete something and then you wait and wait for the next step.
Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?
Go for it. It is truly an adventure and if you're in the right position it could be a dream come true. If you choose to go in on an "open contract" it could be a nightmare.

What do you like about working at United States Marine Corps?
I was able to develop myself into a leadership role, and learned a great deal about what it means to serve selflessly.
What don't you like about working at United States Marine Corps?
It can be confining. There may not be bars surrounding you, but make no mistake you are property of the United States Government.
What suggestions do you have for management?
The Marine Corps has operated in the same or similar fashion since 1775, and the way things are done through the chain of command as well as utilizing the UCMJ seems to be working just fine.
Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?
The Marine Corps is not for everyone. If you cannot maintain a certain level of stress and physical fitness, you may wish to consider another branch of service.
