What do you like about working at U.S. Department of Defense?

Job security and federal pension, easy access to the Pentagon, parking at the Pentagon, food choices at the Pentagon, federal transit subsidy for the metro (Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority ), and the ability to tele-work.

What don't you like about working at U.S. Department of Defense?

Maniacal boss, little chance for promotion, pay freezes, pay reductions, little ability to expand into different arenas.

What suggestions do you have for management?

Actually talk to and engage my employees. Learn about their previous experiences and see what else they bring to the table. Offer tele-work as a daily option. Let employees ex-tern at other agencies and see if they would like to move on or bring back new ideas from other partners. Get an external look from private enterprises to see what we could do differently and more efficiently.

Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?

Upward mobility is non-existent, there will be three more years of pay freezes, you will have to pay more into your retirement -which represents a 5% pay loss, there is an entrenched bureaucracy which is stubborn is not open to new ideas. Lastly: Good Luck!

"Too political"

U.S. Department of Defense Review by U.S. Department of Defense Employee on

2.50

What do you like about working at U.S. Department of Defense?

A chance to see history every day

What don't you like about working at U.S. Department of Defense?

To Political. You are not allowed to do your job. Too many empires and emporers to overcome. You have the authority, but no management backing. Everyone thinks they can do a better job than you. The appraisal system is rigged to get rid of employees who they do not like.

What suggestions do you have for management?

The Air Force needs to evaluate each organization for cost effectiveness. Eliminate the managers who waste taxpayers dollars. Case in point the Department of Defense pays engineers to do engineering work. A lot of engineers and other employees are allowed to perform multimedia functions. Another factor is there are 5 organizations that perform multimedia functions. I estimate that each organization is performing work between 20 to 25 percent of the total workload each month, but staff at 100 percent workload.

Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?

The government is a good place to work if you are allowed to do your job without interference. Just do your research.

"Needs some improvement"

U.S. Department of Defense Review by Supply Chain Planner in Philadelphia, PA on

3.40

What do you like about working at U.S. Department of Defense?

Liberal leave policy, great training in procurement, SAP systems, Federal Acquisition Regulations, and other technical opportunities. If you want to be educated in many areas of federal procurement, supply chain and technical expertise, this is the place to go if you can get in.

What don't you like about working at U.S. Department of Defense?

Work areas tend to be "top heavy", too many chiefs and not enough indians. Too many supervisors are in name only, they are not leaders. If the military could force more of their leadership training on civilian management it could be much better.

What suggestions do you have for management?

Learn to LEAD people, not just "be the boss". A little military leadership training would go a long way. Micro-management is NOT leadership.

Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?

DETAILS! DETAILS! DETAILS! The more detailed your experience, the more they like it. BE SPECIFIC! BE PROACTIVE! This is NOT private industry where brevity is the key! More than anywhere else they look for key words.
