What do you like about working at United States Army?
I love working with Soldiers and other Officers, you will not find a more diverse group of people anywhere else in America. The esprit de corps is something you won't find many other places, Soldiers really do look out for each other. The oppotunities for travel and activities (I shoot tons of weapons, jump out of airplanes [for extra pay!], travelled to three continents) is endless. Medical, dental, and other benefits from living on an installation are generally a lot better than the private sector. Hell, my doctor works in the basement and I can see him any time!
What don't you like about working at United States Army?
Micromanagement is far too common. You will hear many preach "push power to the lowest level" but I have not seen enough of that anywhere. Expect to be told several times in your career to do something you really don't want to do. Hours can be very, very long and the deployments/field time doesn't make it any easier.
What suggestions do you have for management?
Let leaders be leaders! Stop asking for updates every second of every day and give lower level leadership some latitude or, better yet, support them. Take the hit for your guys once in a while, they will take the hit for you. Finally, enough with damn powerpoint!
Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?
The Army has a lot of special programs and jobs you can go for, but all of it requires some sort of risk/hard work. DO NOT pass up these opportunities. Even if you fail, you will regret not having given it a shot in the first place and won't learn anything from the experience. I just got into a job in Civil Affairs that fits my degree, offers opportunities for travel that I want, and training that is hard to get in the civilian world. It wasn't easy getting to that point (and I still have a lot left to go) but its totally worth it. Who knows, you might actually make it!

What do you like about working at United States Army?
got to see the Middle East and deep South U.S. (Virginia and Georgia), got into good shape in Offficer Basic Course, fired weapons that I would never have fired up until this point in my life most likely (saw machine guns, 9 milimeters, M-16), experienced mid-day jogs at 137 degree fahrenheit, realized it was probably a good thing when i did not go in as an enlisted service member and waited until i was an officer. it is a much better position to be in when everyone (almost) refers to you as Sir and salutes you. You also get better living space, by far, as far as I saw. I found that the haircut works well for me and that i wish to pursue similar adventurous lifestyle in my future.
What don't you like about working at United States Army?
I did not like the lack of cooperation from senior officer and peers. The backstabbing would make a decent person nauseous so to speak. I did expect more physically fit officers at the 4th LSO and expected more from several officers in the 3rd Army in terms of personal behavior and admirability. some of them were a far cry from the exemplar soldiers we come across in the media and recruiting ads. the issues with payroll that I experience were egregious and these only took place after i volunteered and served one year of active duty.
What suggestions do you have for management?
keep a better watch over your reporting officers and soldiers, there is corruption. you just have to know how to spot it.
Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?
be careful for what you volunteer for. in officer basic course they tell you if the Army is looking for volunteers be wary. If they tell you it is a great position, ponder any ensuing decision well.

What do you like about working at United States Army?
I was a platoon leader, a cadence caller for the company, and a helicopter mechanic. I loved the leadership position. Also, I was a sharpshooter, each year I entered and won 5 times a medal of accuracy from 600 feet! It was ALOT of fun also learning 'hand-to-hand' combat. I finished my tour in Japan where I re-enlisted for 2 more years. MY total service is 5 years.
What don't you like about working at United States Army?
The USARMY does NOT promote INDIVIDUALITY.
What suggestions do you have for management?
.... we are talking about the MILITARY. Uncle Sam makes the rules. I would suggest NOT making ANY suggestions!
Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?
Be sure this IS something you REALLY want to embark upon. Basic training is HARSH tooput it mildly. The US MARINES CORP'S training is the most rigid, HOWEVER the 6 weeks of training I recieved was rigrous and extremely demanding! Throw away ALL of your OLD THOUGHTS and HABITS. The MILITARY breaks you of ANYTHING that involves YOUR OLD civilian life. The VALUABLE lessons you can expect from the military are: Discipline, Structure, Accuracy, the ability to 'hurry up' and WAIT!, Punctuality, Self-esteem, Being reliable and trusted, being in an competetive situations on a consistant basis, physical and dietary therapy, and a wool blanket! AN OPEN MIND and ACCEPTANCE is the basics, mentally PREPARE yourself for some of the WORST 'de-breifing' of your FORMER self you WILL EVER ENCOUNTER.

"It is not what you know it is who you know."

What do you like about working at United States Army?
The peers all understand the hell we have to deal with, with that we tend to stick together to get our mission complete.
What don't you like about working at United States Army?
The "Old Boy Network" is alive and well. If you come in as an outsider, you will remain an outsider. I have seen a secretary with no IT experience get promoted to IT and once within IT. Now she is equal to my pay and I have 40 years experience in computer hardware and software. She still can't tell the difference between a NIC card and a modem card. Let alone the different kinds of RAM, hardware connections, parallel or serial ports, you get the drift. It is not what you know it is who you know.
What suggestions do you have for management?
Stop hiring your friends, stop sleeping with subordinates and stop promoting for your hidden agendas.
Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?
Put your best foot forward. Be totally honest in your resume and you may have a chance. Overall, this is a fair place to work if you get with a good manager.

What do you like about working at United States Army?
It was always something new. As soon as I mastered one skill or task, I'd have 2-3 more challenges. I loved it
What don't you like about working at United States Army?
The leadership was changing, the values that I came to love were becoming lost as people were more worried about image than doing the right thing. The ethical climate was eroding and I couldn't continue to be part of it.
What suggestions do you have for management?
Treat every person under your care as an intelligent, thinking being who has the ability to do great things in spite of seniority or junior status. I had some incredible subordinates who deserved accolades who were overlooked by my superiors because of their lack of time in the job, and I saw people rewarded for breathing oxygen just because they were in a job for a longer time. It was wrong. People notice
Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?
Always do the right thing. Even when it is hard. Understand that you don't know everything, and always look to build teams which you can learn from as well as lead.

What do you like about working at United States Army?
i travelled to the middle east, experience life in the desert at 137 degrees fahrenheit, a lot of people called me Sir and saluted me and showed respect like that, General Patton was part of 3rd Army.
What don't you like about working at United States Army?
I was expecting much more from the senior officers that I reported to. Some of them were quite clownish and lacked admirablity in significant respects. Instead of drinking soda they should've been working out or watching there caloric intake. Some of them were dismissive of my intellectual efforts and others thought they were brighter than they actually were or thought they were more competent attorneys than they actually were.
What suggestions do you have for management?
Appearance is key. Senior officers should put off clownish behavior, especially when or if ingratiating themselves to enlisted. Ping Pong tournaments are not that important for morale.
Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?
Know that you can be 'screwed' badly. A year of one's life is nothing to sneeze at.

| You said you where in a 137 fahrenheit desert. Morale is pretty important if your going to spend a year in hell. As ;png as they're doing their jobs, let the guys have their fun, their human. Ping Pong and soda is not going to kill you. | 01.24.12 |
"Exceptional opportunity for ordinary people"
United States Army Review by Signals Intelligence Sergeant on
What do you like about working at United States Army?
The resources available were more than sufficient to perform and the training was ongoing for my entire enlistment. I was able to really shine in this environment and it opened doors I would not have even known existed. Coming from a small town, the Army helped me to understand how to associate with people from many backgrounds.
What don't you like about working at United States Army?
Army politics did not always favor true skill and a motivated work ethic. I was not always easy to watch the advancement of those who did not deserve it. I advanced because I was a good analyst and soldier, but those I knew who were only good analysts did not.
What suggestions do you have for management?
Stand up for your soldiers and support them. Work hard when you're at work. Care about the mission. Make every decision count for something productive.
Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?
Join the Army and learn as much as you can. It's a good experience. Choose an Intelligence job!

What do you like about working at United States Army?
Serving in the Army offered the ulitmate job security not to mention an unmatched benefits package. It was also a good source of gaining valuable technical and real life experience.
What don't you like about working at United States Army?
I did not like the unpredictability of not knowing when and if we were going to be deployed overseas. Also it was a strain on family life to the amount of Training exercises we had during a calander year
What suggestions do you have for management?
There really are no suggestion I could provide for management because the Army is here to defend us and you have to prepare and be ready to do that.
Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?
Joining the Army is a committment that will set you up for a successful future. I would recommend it to anyone coming out of high school that is unable to attend college or provide for themselves.
"Clear Cut Black and White demands, just expect to make lots of changes!"
United States Army Review by Real-time Simulations Developer in Fort Leavenworth, KS on
What do you like about working at United States Army?
Demands were very clear and guidance was very thoroughly thought out before hand. You knew what was expected and it was therefor easy to meet the demands outlined by management.
What don't you like about working at United States Army?
Often a project would be "completed" but would extend months on end making minor changes and adjustments to the project to match outside recommendations; changes that were minute in form and wouldn't have a huge impact on the "success" of the project.
What suggestions do you have for management?
None at this time.
Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?
Working for the government is good, but expect that any challenges to growing your skills will come by your own ambition! It's easy to settle back into complacency and simply do the job at hand, however, there are some great rewards by exceeding expectations and delivering above and beyond what was asked for.
