Nortel Review by Nortel Employee in McLean, VA on
What do you like about working at Nortel?
I only liked one or two co-workers there. The management was totally out of touch with employees' needs, salaries, and benefits and on top of that, once you were laid off, there was no compensation or continuation of benefits say for even a month. There is nothing good I can state at this point about this organization.
What don't you like about working at Nortel?
My manager was foul mouthed all the time. She lacked respect for all and voiced it during status meetings. Bad mouthed her and our boss all the time and for a woman, used profanity way too much. She was also disgruntle as her salary was less than me and kept voicing that in front of other employees which led to extremely bad moral.
What suggestions do you have for management?
Improve your salary and benefits and help employees in getting other positions within the company, especially when the contracts are over or ended abruptly by the clients. Do not leave employees out in the cold to fend themselves. Take a look at your USPTO and DHS contracts and employees, past or current. Respect your employees and provide advancement opportunities to them. Provide a good and fostering environment where employees like coming to work every day.
Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?
Yes. Make sure you do not accept a job with PEC/Nortel just because you do not have any other prospects. Also, make sure that if the client contracts are ended or completed, PEC will not lay you off or at least without any benefits package. Otherwise, do not accept the position no matter how much you need a job.

| I loved working for Nortel Networks. I did not like working for PEC/Nortel Government Solutions. Is Nortel Government Solutions going to do a better job of matching employee skills to their work and client environment? Is NGSI going to hear employees without any reprimand and strive to be a place one wishes to work or is NGSI going to not train their managers in employee relations? That will be interesting to see how things will pan out as a result of this survey. | 10.28.09 |

What do you like about working at Nortel?
As many large high technology companies, Northern Telecom was an innovative and exciting environment to work for. The company pioneered many innovative products, they grew rapidly in the communications vendor space. They were the first company to apply advanced computer technology to many "older" communications applications.
What don't you like about working at Nortel?
I can not say that I did not like anything, the only though is that as they relocated from Minnesota to Texas, it was a surprise for many employees, however it worked well for me as I started working at Motorola... and this opened new horizons for me personally.
What suggestions do you have for management?
Northern Telecom can be a growth start on par with companies such as Cisco. The potential is there, it is a careful strategic execution that is needed. There is a need to address faster growth market segment, new software intensive products, ...it would be very profitable to move in that direction faster.
Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?
Be fully professional in your appearance, personal communications, etc. It is a larger company with highly developed technology culture. If you are an experienced professional you will enjoy this environment. Be prepared to discuss you business plans, your technology ideas, ask many questions. Expect to have a bit more structured environment than smaller high tech. companies, but not much different.

What do you like about working at Nortel?
I loved being able to travel and work with the customers I loved the products and the technology.
What don't you like about working at Nortel?
The dishonesty of some of the management, particularly the new Vice President Sue Wade at the training center. I was told to pass an instructor even though he was unable to even adequately teach the classes. I stated that he need another month or six weeks to prepare more and she demanded I pass him because revenue depended on him teaching the classes. I told her that all the students from the class he had just taught would be demanding their money back, and they had to refund all money for all 18 students. It was a great place to work before this vice president was brought on board. I think the dishonesty at the upper management level was a good portion of what led to their downfall.
What suggestions do you have for management?
Honesty and fair treatment of the employees and customers goes a long way.
Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?
Be careful about NorTel because they are not doing well financially and are being split up to be sold. It could possibly not be a long term employer.

What do you like about working at Nortel?
I was allowed to work as a telecommuter which which served best to my career and family. My focus is for my life is to take care of my personal growth moving forward with my career and taking care of my family.
What don't you like about working at Nortel?
I was very disappointed with the way top management handled all matters at Nortel for last 10 years as soon as they realized down trend of Nortel businesses. I wonder how board of directors/top management made so much money when company started with layoffs, loosing money in all businesses rather than making profit, announced bankruptcy.
What suggestions do you have for management?
Suggestion to management is to manage and act as a head of the family not of yours but of company. If the structure and organization of the company to work hand in hand with management and employees to bring prosperity to the comapny then i am 200% sure people would have worked really hard and smartly to save company from bankruptcy.
Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?
If you looking to retire at Nortel at right age you can't trust Nortel unless they bring back business and hire all who got laid off.

| Nortel was a great company to work for up until about 2000. It had been downhill ever since the telecom bust and is soon destined for the histoy books as the company goest from chapter 11 to dissolution under bankruptcy. Saga of a great technology innovator ruined by incompetent board of directors and greedy executives. | 12.10.09 |

What do you like about working at Nortel?
There may be pockets of positions where one can have some normalcy in terms of a career. But, overall, not a good place to work.
What don't you like about working at Nortel?
Management, the way go about doing business, employee relations and taking care of employees is definitely not a priority, benefits, especially when they lay you off, etc... Should I go on?
What suggestions do you have for management?
Be more upfront and truthful, be more engaging with your employees and visit them on client sites as often as you can, hear your employees once you have heard of clients and do not allow the bottom line and bad attitude clients dictate your behavior and what is "right" to do.
Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?
Only work at Nortelgov if you need the $$. Make sure you go in knowing what can happen to you if you get laid off.

What do you like about working at Nortel?
1 man's job distributed to 3 or 4 people. If senior enough, you could earn top $ without even doing any work, or even showing up at work. It's like your best dream comes true, isn't it?
What don't you like about working at Nortel?
Not one of the seniors; not old enough to obtain membership of the good-old-boy club.
What suggestions do you have for management?
Identify your contributors and compensate them fairly. Get rid of the deadwood. Since you are so busy playing politics and not keeping top talents, no wonder the company went for Chapter 11. And, PLEASE, quit from Cisco. People there are now noticing you are polluting their culture and work environment. Don't turn Cisco into the next Nortel!
Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?
Ask them when would all the senior mgmt (director and above) quit/leave? And come back after that.

What do you like about working at Nortel?
Teamwork and sharing information between engineers. Was a great place to work and had 100 year history in telecommunications.
What don't you like about working at Nortel?
Bankruptcy! From the last 10 years of my career Nortel started layoffs because of taking on to much det buying business that didn't fit there model. Employees were unable to move to other jobs as layoffs were happening regularly. Employees felt more secure staying in position they were in as they had more experience then if they took on a new job within the company.
Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?
This company will not be interviewing. Not to many left, I lasted longer than most.

I advise not to waste time pursuing a career with this company. This company just tries to contract everything and avoid any standard human interaction.
