"The good old boys club need to go! Qualified people need to be given the opportunity to succeed and not the brown nosers."

Nokia Review by Sr Design/Test Engineer in San Diego, CA on

2.30

What do you like about working at Nokia?

The R&D and new technology was great. The upper management (folks from Finland) were great.

What don't you like about working at Nokia?

The problem or the bottle neck was with the middle management band. The "good old boys club" was always there and brown nosing was your key to success. As for an example: 1. A person with secretarial experience was hired and promoted to lead a part of the S/W Test group; 2. A person with Biology degree was hire and promoted to lead a part of the S/W Test group. This not only introduced setbacks, it also encouraged "back stabbing" and "vulture culture".

What suggestions do you have for management?

Please hire people with "ethics", people who are well qualified and has proper college degree(s) and in the field. Please cut the cancerous part of the middle management, remove the "good old boys club" and let qualified engineers to shine and be productive. Nokia is a good company, however, the middle management is destroying the original Nokia culture.

Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?

Nokia as a company is a great place to work. Need to stay away from the deadly office politics and watch out for the "vulture culture".

"Would not work at Nokia again. Good money, but poor people skills"

Nokia Review by Nokia Employee in San Diego, CA on

What do you like about working at Nokia?

The 6 Weeks of vacation time, and beautiful location. The performance bonuses were AWESOME! Serious money to be had there.

What don't you like about working at Nokia?

Poor upper and middle management with unreasonable expections of schedule. Changed product directions often as though they didn't have a clear plan. Middle level managers accepted rumors about people as fact during reviews. ALWAYS negative feedback on reviews even when I was team leader and wanted to put praise on my team member's reviews. favorites during merit raises without consulting team leaders on actual performance.

What suggestions do you have for management?

Advertise the incentive bonus program before work begins. Resolve the bonus results before the next quarter begins. Positive praise sometimes is worth more than just throwing more money at people! You are allowed to give more than one person on a team a "high exceeds" rating if more than one person has worked hard!

Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?

Ask lots of questions about management goals, technical direction required, balance of work and life (they say they balance it, but don't practice it), and make sure you are clear about what area they are hiring you for.

What do you like about working at Nokia?

The administration staff (personnel and payroll) were very pleasant to deal with. The account manager and recruiter were always available to handle any problem or request. Overall the company is very responsive to the contract employee.

What don't you like about working at Nokia?

I am not a real fan of contracting work. The contracting companies try to give as little as they can to the employees in way of benefits, including paid time off. The company to which you are assigned often treats you like a lower class citizen and bars you from all activities at the job site. This creates very low morale in the contractors.

What suggestions do you have for management?

As is becoming true in this country, the company needs to realize that without the employees there is no company. The employee knows their work results in the executives receiving more benefits (bonuses, profit sharing, etc.) than they do and this builds resentment when the employee does not get treated as a valued asset to the company. Remember who makes the company work.

Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?

As far as contracting companies go, I think this is one of the better outfits.

"A one of a kind experience that just can't be beat."

What do you like about working at Nokia?

The opportunity to configure routers & switches, implement RADIUS & SNMP on PDUs in Vienna & Hong Kong, install line cards in 6509 Cisco Switches, etc. This was a wonderful experience that will last forever. I was allowed to work with a group of Senior Network Engineers that were always willing to go the extra mile to make sure that the students learned value skills relevant to the current networking industry. I couldn't have been in a better place at a better time. The equipment & devices, staff, and location made a big difference in my learning experience.

What suggestions do you have for management?

Allow students to remain longer if possible.

Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?

Do your best to get in. You won't regret it. You will the chance to put your hands of devices, configure, troubleshoot, etc. This is a company that I would love to work for & plan on applying with ASAP. I'm just waiting to pass the 2nd part of my CCNA Certification Exam.

"NOKIA doesn't get it and couldn't hang."

Nokia Review by NOC Supervisor on

What do you like about working at Nokia?

Decent pay, nice benefits and the San Francisco location was very non-corporate encompassing the bay-area lifestyle. This was unique to only this location.

What don't you like about working at Nokia?

Major disconnect between corporate HQ and the "soldiers on the ground". We would spend weeks if not months waiting for "approvals" on anything. A lot of poor decisions were made in HQ without regard or knowledge of the ground war and the consequences. Essentially, everyone at the San Francisco site got screwed. There was no HQ loyalty to the staff regardless of being the best performing NOKIA site worldwide.

What suggestions do you have for management?

Shatter the glass ceiling, come down off the VIP cloud and see what your company and workers actually does. Then HQ decisions would have some substance.

Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?

Not really, NOKIA is very corporate. If a suit and tie is your thing, and you don't mind not having job security, go for it.

What do you like about working at Nokia?

I loved the exposure to people

What don't you like about working at Nokia?

I believe the company can do better with employee relations which in affect will improve overall production however, overall Job is good.

What suggestions do you have for management?

Your as strong as your weakest link. In this case, employee relations in the manufacturing sector. When employee relations is good, production increased by 30% which translates into higher levels of quality control and employee retention which in turn improves the base quota. Unfortunately, within our branch that housed up to 3,000 employees, employee relations was below average 90% of the time, and potential was lost.

Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?

Ask questions, do a cost benefit analysis, focus on the conpanies consistency and quality and how your skills can improve those areas

"Great working environment. Localities need decision power."

Nokia Review by Sales Engineer and Project Manager in Irving, TX on

4.00

What do you like about working at Nokia?

Management wanted to help the workers do their job and positive reinforcement, not motivate them through negative reinforcement.

What don't you like about working at Nokia?

Too bureaucratic and strategy decisions made in central location for all product lines.

What suggestions do you have for management?

Diversify technologies and decisions to the local markets and stop trying to cut development cost. A companies grows to be profitable, it does not cut expenses to be profitable.

Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?

The Internal nature of the company means you will be working with a multitude of cultures. Be aware that colloquialisms rarely translate well.

What do you like about working at Nokia?

I get to work with cool tools, interact with smart people. I get to work with people from many departments. I like that my job has very varied responsibilities. I like my boss, who has provided training for me.

What don't you like about working at Nokia?

I don't get enough vacation days - maybe because it is located in America.

What suggestions do you have for management?

I would make an optional flex-time work week. A flexible work week would be best.

Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?

If you are driven and inspired easily, this is a great place to work because of the cool technologies used. If you are not inspired easily, then the opportunities can help make it so. This is a great place to work if you love IT.

"Better than many, especially if you're in the right area."

Nokia Review by Experience Center Guide in Dallas, TX on

4.00

What do you like about working at Nokia?

The environment, the basics of the job I did, and most of the people.

What don't you like about working at Nokia?

Though my peers and I were hired as part of marketing, after a while, upper management began to make our role a sales function. When that didn't revive sales, the program soon folded and my peers and I were laid off.

What suggestions do you have for management?

I probably wasn't there long enough to make an informed judgment on this.

Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?

Sure: Just make sure that the area you're joining is poised for stabiity, before you join.
