In the beginning of my employment in the late 1970's I had the privilege to work with brilliant scientists, the best know in the pharmaceutical business.
What don't you like about working at Merck?
Beginning the 1980's unethical and incompetent elements have taken control of the Company's R&D. In order to justify their high positions and compensations, certain individuals regularly used plagiarism. The Company not only allowed but also supported unethical behavior and incompetence.
What suggestions do you have for management?
None, Merck's management is too corrupt to consider any suggestion other than continuing their way of operation essential to their survival. I have a suggestion for the Company, however: get rid off the current management and start building a new leadership by hiring people with demonstrated competence and ethical conduct beyond reproach.
Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?
If you get hired and in your position you demonstrate competence and professional and personal integrity, Merck's corporate "culture" is going to destroy your career.

| I whole hardily agree. I was at Merck in PA supporting Basic Research for 9 years hired as grade 7 left as grade 6. When I joined the CO in 1998 the were at the top, the best of the US Big Pharmas in Research, Equipment, and Leadership. Bad Management and an overall effort to squeeze the most compunds out of the labs with no thought to employee well being is ruing them. Laying people off via E-mail is also another of there great tactics. Overall they suck, The care more about getting the proper tile for Peter Kims bathroom flown in by corporate jet from the marble quarry in Italy then subsidizing the riduculous cost of the crap served in the lunch room. And HR, Not there for current employees, only to hire you and fire you. I would look elsewhere in Big Pharma, unles you like living under the gun with constant layoff and lies. | 11.10.09 |

What suggestions do you have for management?
To open up to employees who show exceptional apptitude and give them more opportunities for advancement. Do not pigeon hole those who started with the company in a Union position. I was not informed at the time of hire that the position was a Union position nor that it would be hard to break into a salaried position. This information came straight from managers at Merck.
Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?
Be aware of what position you are interviewing for, check to see if it is a Union position. It will be extremely hard to break into a salaried position from a Union position once you are hired at Merck.

Large company politics and extensive procedures for obtaining authorization made it very difficult to get things done quickly, although I do understand the reasoning. I unionized labor force created instances where appearances meant all and substance meant next to nothing.
