PulteGroup owns a number of residential home development companies, including not only Centex, but also Pulte Homes, Del Webb and DiVosta Homes. They were started 60 years ago by Bill Pulte in Detroit. Today, they operate in 29 states and 60 home markets across the country building new home developments.

In 2009, PulteGroup purchased Centex Corporation, making it one of the largest residential home development organizations in the United States. Prior to this corporate merger, Centex Homes was on the brink of failure due to the downturn in the housing market.

Centex places a great emphasis on building high quality homes at affordable prices. They have garnered top rankings in the past several years by JD Powers and Associates' customer satisfaction in multiple markets.

Centex also embraces environmentally friendly building practices. Many of their homes integrate green building materials and energy efficient features. Low flow and dual flow toilets are part of their water conservation efforts. Also, most homes incorporate recycled building materials and xeriscaping landscaping.

Centex also places a great deal of energy into social responsibility. Employees at Centex enjoy a work environment that is has a wide range of diversity in not only their employees, but also in the quality and range of products offered. Centex culture embraces differences in employees’ backgrounds and life experiences. Centex also encourages employees to be socially responsible and participate in local charitable volunteer programs.

Centex and PulteGroup also place a great deal of emphasis on employee development. They offer personal and professional development training courses as part of their regular employee program. While working at Centex, employees are encouraged to take courses in leadership and performance management. During the first three months of employment, employees are sent through a mentoring training program to help them learn about the corporate culture and become familiar with company structure and processes.

Centex careers include sales, construction management, customer relations, information technology, land management and mortgage banking. Additional career opportunities exist in corporate management, such as human resources, finance, administrative support and architecture. Centex also has employment programs available for recent college graduates to help them develop a long career path in the home building industry.
