Current CEO: John Pluthero

Status: Active

Cable and Wireless Worldwide PLC (C&W) is a global provider of voice, Internet, data, network hosting and other telecommunications services to governments, corporations and telecommunications resellers. The company was created in 2010 when parent company Cable and Wireless separated its two main business divisions, the Cable and Wireless Communications Group and the Cable and Wireless Worldwide Group. The Cable and Wireless Worldwide Group went on to become Cable & Wireless Worldwide.

C&W is active in over 150 countries including the United States but is headquartered in Bracknell, U.K. Its current Chief Executive Officer John Pluthero took over from embattled former CEO Jim Marsh in June 2011 after C&W’s core earnings came in 10 percent below market expectations during its first year of operations as a standalone company.

C&W has a long history that dates back to the formation of the Eastern Telegraph Company in 1872, the first telegraph operation to connect Britain, Europe and India. With the invention of wireless at the turn of the 20th century, a fierce rivalry developed between the two communication technologies but after Marconi developed a short-wave radio capable of transmitting both telephony and telegraphy in 1924, wireless had clearly gained the upper hand. In 1928, the Eastern Telegraph Company merged with Marconi''s Wireless Telegraph Company to form a company that came to be known as Cable and Wireless.

Nationalized by the British government in 1947, Cable and Wireless became a private company again in 1981. A number of strategic acquisitions throughout the subsequent three decades have helped position Cable and Wireless today as the third largest supplier of IP services worldwide.

Working at Cable & Wireless means working for an international company with plenty of opportunity for business trips abroad. Cable & Wireless Worldwide careers tend to be one of three tracks: sales, product and client managers; technical solutions architects and data network engineers; and business analysts of all types. Cable & Wireless culture is still in the process of defining itself after the recent spinoff from its parent company but employees report that it is welcoming to newcomers in the telecom business. Cable and Wireless Worldwide benefits include 25 paid holidays annually with an option to buy or sell days; life, dental and health insurance coverage; pension and travel insurance.
