Bechtel Careers & Info

Current CEO: Brendan Bechtel Status: Bechtel is the third largest privately-held corporation and the biggest engineering contractor in the United States.

Bechtel careers include engineers, computer programmers, information technology, geologists, scientists and more. These persons form the teams that operate everything from airports to power plants to oil refineries to water systems. In addition to its private holdings and contracts, Bechtel is a major government contractor in the United States but also handles projects all over the world.

According to its website, Bechtel has some 53,000 employees. They work on a hundred different projects in more than forty companies. With a large number of sites and such a diverse number of projects, working at Bechtel Corporation means different things to different people. Some may be working on a solar project in the desert while others are working on a plant to treat radioactive waste. Some may be designing a bridge, dam or power plant. Others run the corporate accounting and finance offices or provide marketing expertise.

Bechtel culture is generally a very professional atmosphere. This may be due to the number of engineers and scientists as well as the pressure of the work. Also, it can be exciting because many projects are cutting edge. For those in the business offices, many stated that it was easy to feel lost in the large, busy atmosphere. Some stated that their bosses and teams were supportive. Others commented on the inability of management to listen to employees. Some stated that the large company could not always respond quickly enough to problems.

Bechtel benefits depend on the job position. Full-time professionals are offered a choice of medical plans. They can also get disability insurance options and a 401K retirement plan. Employees get twenty paid vacation days and nine paid holidays per year. One unique plan allows them to buy time off, spreading the cost of the unpaid days off throughout the year. Bechtel offers on-the-job training and mentoring, particularly to new employees. It has its own courses available online and offers reimbursement for job-related courses at universities. In addition, it provides a scholarship fund for the children of employees.

Contract and short term employees may or may not be entitled to benefits. However, contractors do make a high rate of pay that can offset the cost of personal medical insurance. They do get the opportunity to have paid time off, and they can set up a special work schedule. For instance, some opt to work their forty hours by taking ten hour shifts for four days each week.
