American Diabetes Association
Overview
American Diabetes Association was founded in 1940, by 28 physicians. The initial purpose was to form an exclusive medical association for doctors, researchers and health care professionals. This occurred about 20 years after the discovery of insulin. The Association kept statistics and by 1960, there were 1.25 million diagnosed cases of diabetes, with another 72,000 diagnosed that year. At this point more funding was more focused on research.
The American Diabetes Association worked to get insurance companies to cover diabetic patients, and they pushed for employment for the diabetic patient. The Research Foundation was established in 1994,and the Association continued to grow.
