"You can do great work here, but no one will thank you for it."

What do you like about working at Military Times?

"I was able to write interesting, meaningful and exciting stories. I had motivation to teach myself a great deal of technical skills and put them to good use."

Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?

"You just have to be confident in yourself and face him down. You'll probably know in the first couple minutes whether he likes you. If he doesn't, God help you."

What don't you like about working at Military Times?

"The management culture is just horrific. Editors have free reign to be verbally abusive to their subordinates. If you have a technical position that requires expertise, no one will understand your value. They will fire you at the drop of a hat. Turnover is very high."

What suggestions do you have for management?

"Management just doesn't care about morale. It's Gannett, and journalists are a dime a dozen, so they have no incentive to care. Management knows they could do more to protect and encourage their subordinates. Instead they reward managers who are slavedrivers and ignore or punish complaints from the bottom rungs."
